What do you get when you cross Jane Fonda and Shakira? Zumba!

If you’ve been inspired by Dancing With The Stars (and who doesn’t want to dance after watching an episode?!), or if you’re looking to spice up your workout, look no further.   Zumba features aerobic and dance moves with a combination of fast and slow rhythms.  Jane Fonda and Shakira morphed into one.  It’s a tasting tour of popular Latin dances, from salsa to samba, paired perfectly with upbeat Latin music.  And oh by the way, while you’re at it, you’ll be toning and sculpting your body to a dancer’s physique. No previous dance skills are required and what makes this even better than formal dance class is that you can ditch your high heels for a pair of comfy sneakers!  Feeling self-conscious?  Start at your own pace- watch the instructor’s feet and just mimic the feet.  Then when you’ve mastered feet, add the hand motions.  The moves and routines are repetitive so you’ll catch on quickly.  Soon you’ll be shaking and shimmying, making Ricky Martin proud!  As one instructor once told me, there are no mistakes in Zumba, just unexpected solos!.  It’s fantastic to see people of all ages enjoying the class.  Zumba is so fun you will be transformed onto the dance floor in Cuba and you’ll forget you’re in an exercise class.  For some routines you’ll get transported to Africa or a Bollywood production.  The hour just breezes by.  The music is so catchy  I’m ready to buy the playlist for my next party.  Besides, if Kristie Alley can do it, I know you can…

It’s been 3 months since my first Zumba experience (SEE MY FIRST BLOG ENTRY) and I wanted to give you my personal update:

First of all, I still LOVE the class.  Not bored at all and I sweat every class.  I like hearing my favorite songs and knowing some of the moves already!  I honestly enjoy all the Zumba instructors at Uforia.  The songs are similar but they all add their own twist.  I love Asya’s gymnastic moves and Ruby’s street dance style.  Sometimes the instructors have different moves for the same song and the “seasoned Zumba-ists” will dance a different move!  So cool.

Also, believe it or not, I am feeling less stiff and robotic and definitely less intimidated.  I wouldn’t say I’m good, but I’m more confident and I “got my own style going on”!  And not to brag, but I’m pretty sure Asya gave me a nod of approval during class today.

Finally, I appreciate dance at a whole different level.  I love to watch professional dancers and analyze their dance routines.  Believe me, this is a huge transformation from the girl who used to hide in the corner of the gym in 6th grade during school dances.

Here’s the best part– You can Zumba to your heart’s content at Uforia!  No other gym or studio in Palo Alto has as many weekly Zumba classes.  Classes are offered Monday 6:30 pm, Tuesday 9:45 am + 6:30 pm, Wednesday (coming soon) Thursday 9:45 am + 6:30 pm, Friday 4:30 pm with wine and cheese and Saturday at 10:15 am and there is also a Kid’s Zumba class (ages 9-13) on Thursday afternoons at 4:45 pm.  Click here to sign up, I’ll see you on the dance floor!
